Texans Practice

I learned a few things watching the Texans practice today. One is that they get a lot more done without pads than I would think is possible. They waste very little time during a practice. They film three or four angles of everything which would be a big help. We could get a lot more done in our practice if every coach had one or two assistants just to set up drills and catch footballs. How nice would it be to have four full practice fields including one that is indoors. We do have some of the same equipment, the same helmets and I still think we will have nicer uniforms. I also think that coach Kubiak said more to me than he did during the whole practice. Go Warriors!

2010 Spring Game

An inter-squad scrimmage is always an interesting thing as a head coach because it is not possible to be perfect on both sides of the ball at the same time. Traditionally the defense is usually better during the Spring Game and today was not an exception. I do believe that our own defense will be the best we see all year and I am very pleased with the progress that we are making on both sides of the ball. I believe that we have the potential to be a great football team. We have had the opportunity to have several guest coaches with us in the spring with a tremendous amount of experience (I hope we will have them in the fall as well) and they have also confirmed for me that we have a great deal of talent.

There were several things that I forgot to mention or probably did not make very clear today so please check the website. One thing was regarding the booster club and season tickets which make purchasing high quality equipment and many other aspects of our program possible. I believe in leading by example (another reason the seniors are responsible for the equipment) which is why Bethany and I join the Coach's Club but I also realize that not everyone can afford to do that so please do not feel obligated. There are many other ways that you can serve the football program other than giving money and one that I always appreciate is prayer.

The uniforms are Navy, White, and Columbia Blue like our current ones (the printout looked a little black) and every helmet will be silver. All of our helmets get reconditioned and painted every year. You can still buy an old jersey all summer long and hopefully we will find a few of the missing numbers.

It has been suggested to me that we play the spring game in the evening next year to avoid the heat. Since that suggestion came from a mom of four small children I think I will agree. While it was a little hot it was also a great day and I want to thank everyone for coming out and cheering on the Warriors.

Sping Football is Underway

Both high school and middle school have completed there first spring practice. We had a great turnout for both teams and out numbers in the fall could be easily be over 90 players. We might even break the century mark if enrollment for next year continues its rapid pace. If we have a 100 players we might just sell out of season tickets. I am not sure what the lead time is but we will get more chairs installed if that is the case. The players are excited about football and ready to put in the work that is required to make it a great season.

80 Plus

I know a little about having a lot of kids but today was a whole different story. Over eighty K-5th grade students descended onto to the football field to play with some really big toys, maybe learn some basic skills and hopefully gain a new role model or two. There are always a lot of thank you's from the elementary parents but I love it more for what it does for the HS players.

I love to hear them explain the basics of the drills and learn the names of the little kids. I heard more than one elementary student refer to the HS players as "professionals." I love the opportunity to challenge the HS players to live up to the exceptions and the role models that they are and should be in the eyes of the elementary students. Some of those little kids will be the stars when the current players are coming back for homecoming. I hope that we will continue to build a legacy as a football program and as a school that is continually impacting the next generation.

Elementary Family Fun Day

Are you ready for some football? This weekend, four Warrior QB's spent two days learning the basic fundamentals of the position and were willing to take on the more important part of "Accepting the Risk of Leadership." We have a team of great leaders and I expect to see a lot of growth in this area during the 2010 season.

One great way to develop leaders is to give of our time to impact the next generation, which we will be doing this Friday from 3:30 to 5:00 on the football field. I need at least 20 players and would love to have several parents at the event. We rotate elementary students through 6 stations that teach them some basic football fundamentals and also provide them with an autographed mini football. Current seniors and other select players will be singing autographs. Players that attend will be able to get their helmet for spring football practice that night and put it in their locker.

Spring Football

Track and Baseball may have just started but Football is just around the corner. Spring practice will begin on May 10 for returning HS players (this includes 8th graders) and May 11 for returning MS players. HS spring practice is full pads and we will play our annual spring game on Saturday May 22 at 10 a.m. MS spring practice is non-contact. If your son is not sure about playing HS football this is the perfect opportunity to check it out. It is a more relaxed environment and we focus on fundamentals and the basics of our offensive and defensive philosophy.

Varsity uniforms will be on sale for $10 after the spring game. This will help to offset the cost of our new uniforms and when we sell everyone of them I will not have to do any laundry. I have had the opportunity to see a sample of our new varsity uniforms and they are simply top of the line at any level.

There has been a lot in the news lately regarding football and concussions. I wanted to let you know that at all levels we do teach proper techniques and fundamentals that should limit the risk of this injury, but it is a contact sport Both in the spring and in the fall I will be personally coaching the first few tackling drills for all players to insure that we learn the basics. I also want to let you know about some equipment changes that we will be making in the fall. The most important defense against a concussion is a players mouthpiece. We will be upgrading the standard mouthpieces that we buy for every player, however I am not planning to replace it when they lose it like we do the less expensive ones. We will also be starting to purchase the next generation of football helmet the Revolution Speed by Riddle. I believe that this is the best helmet on the market. We will eventually replace all our varsity helmets which will allow us to upgrade the MS to our current Revolution helmets. This process will take several years so the highest contact positions and players will be given the newest helmets first. I am committed to equipping our players with the best equipment available both for their safety and to produce the best football players that we can.

We are going to make it a great year. Season ticket and football booster club information for 2010 will be available when spring football practice starts. If you have any questions about football please do not hesitate to contact me.

2010 Varsity Football Schedule

We want to play the best teams to see just how well we are closing the gap. I do not want to put together a schedule that will result in 10 wins but not challenge our football team to be the best they can be. 2010 will be a challenge as we have upgraded our schedule strength considerably. We will take the field against three Division II teams and face two more in preseason scrimmages. The season stars at home with the traditional rivalry game against Brazos Christian before hitting the road for three straight road games against Division II opponents, Northland, Westbury and Second Baptist. We return home for the back to back Division IV state champions, Canyon Creek Richardson. District play will open up at home with Bay Area and will also include traditional rival Faith West in place of Pope John Paul the 23rd this year. One final non district game against Evadale, a small public school from close to Beaumont and a final district game at home against Faith West will lead the Warriors into the playoffs for the third straight year. You can view the complete schedule at www.cypresschristianfootball.org/schedule.php

Football Party

The football party will be this Sunday at 4PM at the Mitchells. There address 12502 William Dowdell 77429, just about a mile from school at Eldridge and Cypress N. Houston. We will be able to watch the end of the Colts and Jets game that starts at 2 and watch the entire Vikings/Saints game that starts at 5:40.

If you have not already sent me an RSVP please do. We usually have a few parents that hang out and watch the game which is always welcome. If you want to send a snack food it will get eaten but your son does not need to bring anything. We will be having wings.

Highlight Video and Game Film

I will not have all the DVD's copied by Sunday but each player will get a highlight film and pictures/stats DVD. If your son would like full copies of a particular game or even all the games just have them talk to me at school. Once I finish the full highlight DVD for the team I will add the playoff games to the individual highlight films on the web. I will probably set those so they can be downloaded from the website but I can also put it on a DVD for your son.

I added Northland to the schedule on Week 1. It will probably be at Northland this year but that has not yet been determined.

Using Our Losses

It is always interesting how God works. I have heard Colt McCoy share his faith after many football games but has never impacted as much as it did this time. I hope we always praise God in all things, as a program, a school, coaches, parents, and players.
