Touchdown Club’s Sportsmanship Trophy

Touchdown Club’s Sportsmanship Trophy
This year our football program his been recognized for some great things. It has provided many opportunities for our philosophy of using football to build godly men to impact our community. The most recent recognition of this that we have been named a finalist for the Touchdown Club’s prestigious Sportsmanship Trophy for 2010-2011. Schools are nominated by officials for this award and we are one of five schools at our level that have been nominated. The award will be given out at luncheon on Thursday January, 27 at the JW Marriott in the Galleria. I will be attending the event and you are welcome to attend as well. Tickets are $45 and can be purchased from the Touchdown Club. Click here for more information about this award and the event.

Off-Season Workouts Start Today

Off-Season Workouts
Off-season strength and conditioning workouts start today for anyone that is not currently participating in a winter sport. Coach Fields will be running the workouts with me and other football coaches being present on a regular basis. If your son is going to be on the track team (which I strongly encourage if they are not playing baseball) the workout will last about 90 minutes and start right after school. If your son is not running track they are limited (TAPPS rules) to 60 minutes and will be done at 4:30.

These workouts will focus on making your son a better athlete and are not just a sport specific workout. Seniors are welcome to attend and it would be highly recommended for those considering college football. Each athlete should wear tennis shoes and comfortable workout clothing.

End of Season Party
We will have our annual end of season party on January 23. We will be watching the AFC/NFC Championship games, our own highlight film and eating wings. The party will start at 4:00 and be hosted by the Mitchell’s who live just a couple minutes from the school at 12502 William Dowdell, 77429. The wings and some snack food will be provided but please send your son with drinks and additional snack food.

Boys and Girls Country
We did not have an opportunity to do a service project as a team during the season but we will have an opportunity on January 29. We will be traveling to Boys and Girls Country to put on a football camp from and spend time with those kids from 1 to 3 in the afternoon. I will be sending out more information and will need an accurate head count next week.

Off Season Workouts

Off Season

Our football program has the most room to grow in the areas of speed, quickness and physical and mental toughness and the best time to do that is the off season. Under my direction Coach Fields will be running our off season workouts. These workouts will be Monday through Thursday starting next week right after school and will be conducted as a part of the track practice for those athletes in track.

I want to strongly encourage every football player to participate in track if they are not playing baseball. I will be helping with the track program along with Coach Fields, Coach Honeycutt and Coach Gentry who will be the head boys track coach. If an athlete is not signed up for track they are limited to a one hour workout by TAPPS rules and will need to leave at 4:30. Track is a great way to get faster and being on the team does not necessarily require you to participate in meets or do multiple events. There are only 23 weeks to work out before the start of the 2011 season so let’s get to work.

Senior Show Case and College Football

Click here for information about a great free college football recruiting event in Houston for current seniors on February 19 in the Texans practice facility. If your son has any interest in playing college football this is an event they need to attend. I talk with college coaches every week and need to know if your son is interested in playing college football. The first step is for them to meet with Shelly Patterson and she will help them put together a recruiting packet that we send out to colleges.

Survey and Player Interviews

I greatly appreciate those that have filled out the survey and would like more of you to take a few minutes. There is one for everyone at: www.cypresschristian.org/football/End-of-Season-Survey.cfm . If your son has not had an exit interview with me please encourage them to do that after school one day.

Equipment

We still have some missing equipment so please get that turned in so that we can finish our inventory and start our reconditioning process.

2011 Season

Spring football will start May 9 with our spring game on Saturday, May 21 at 10 a.m. The first fall practice for the 2011 season will be on August 1.
