A New Home

The Pressbox has a new home. A few bleachers to move and it will not be long before we have a grandstand. The current schedule it to pour the footings in about 2 weeks and the grandstand construction is set to start the week of July 6th.

Strength and Conditioning Begins

Tomorrow is the first day of our summer strength and conditioning program. I met with Coach Powers and Coach Martin today to go over all the details. I am very excited about our summer program and I hope your son comes with an attitude that is coachable and set to work hard. November football games are earned in June and July and your coaching staff will be providing over 500 hours of coaching in those two months. We are committed and I hope it is contagious.

We have two times avaliable for your son to lift. We ask that they commit to one time but they can switch times if there are schedule conflicts for a particual day or week.

Monday-Thursday 8-10AM
Monday-Thursday 3-5PM
Tuesday 5-6:30PM 7 on 7

Coaches will be in the weight room coaching proper technique at all times. We follow the Bigger, Faster, Stronger program with a few minor adjustments. BFS is one of the most trusted football strength programs available and it is used at all levels of football.

Your son will be required to write down all their weights and reps on workout sheets so they can measure how they Close the Gap. Your son will also be signing a contract with me if they participate in our summer program. There are still spots available to work with Coach Tyler Martin on speed and agility. Coach Martin will be at both workout times this week if you have questions or want to sign up for that additional program. Participation in the summer strength and conditioning program is not required to be on the football team in the fall.

I will not be able to attend the sessions tomorrow because I will be turning in the permit for the grandstand first thing in the morning. I will attend both morning and evening sessions on a periodic basis. Please keep sending in the player profiles and I am still taking quotes about the football program.

Go Warriors,

Coach Spenn

Off Season Workouts

One of our core values is commitment and one of the best ways to see that is through participation in our off season workouts. Character has been defined as how you act when you think no one is watching. Commitment is similar in that it can best be seen when the work is hard and the rewards of a Friday night are along ways off.

I am going to ask your son to sign a contract with me regarding the weight room rules, their conduct at off season workouts and their commitment to the program. Off season workouts are not required to be on the football team but they are essential for your son to be the best football player that he can be. I understand and encourage camps and family vacations (prior to August please) and players will not be penalized in any way for attending those.

We will require your son track his lifting by filling out a workout sheet as he lifts. Even if your son does not lift with the team, this should be done as part of any serious workout routine. This helps us to push him to get better and allows us to measure just how he is Closing the Gap.

Strength and Conditioning Schedule
8 Weeks (June 1 through July 23)
We will have two workout times this summer for your son to attend. They can attend either session but we are encouraging the Freshmen and those new to the weight room to attend the afternoon session. Coach Powers and Coach Tyler Martin will be running the weight training program. Coach Spenn and other varsity coaches will attend sessions on a periodic basis.

Monday-Thursday 8:00 to 10:00 AM
Monday-Thursday 3:00 to 5:00 PM (Open to 8th graders)

Freshmen and 8th graders are encouraged to attend the afternoon session.
Players should commit to one time but can switch it conflicts arise on a particular day or week.

7 on 7 (June 2 through July 22)
All players are welcome to attend but this will focus on the passing game. It will follow the afternoon session of Strength and Conditioning on Tuesday all 8 weeks of the summer schedule and will be run by Coach Spenn and Coach Honeycutt.

Tuesdays 5:00 to 6:30 PM

Speed Training
Coach Tyler Martin will be doing specific sport and position speed training similar to what is available from CAP or Velocity at a lower cost. This is a great opportunity for our athletes. These times are specific for football players but additional times are available. For more details contact Tyler Martin (goodfight23@yahoo.com).

Monday-Thursday 10:00-11:30 AM $40/week
Monday-Thursday 5:00-6:30 PM $40/week
Monday, Wednesday, & Thursday 5:00-6:30 PM $30/week

I look forward to seeing everyone over the summer as we work to Close the Gap.

Coach Spenn

Cypress Christian Football Mini Camp

On Saturday June 27, Cypress Christian will host a football camp for all area high school students. The camp will feature coaches from Taylor University and Greenville College. These coaches will work with the athletes and also talk with both the athletes and their parents about playing college football, the recruiting process, and their respective programs. I believe this is a great opportunity for parents and players to see two college programs up front and in person that are very similar to how we run our program at Cypress Christian. For more information and to download a registration form go to http://www.cypresschristian.org/408061.ihtml. Sign your son up and have him bring a friend or two as well.

Summer Football Camps

There are a lot of great football camps throughout Houston each summer. The following is a listing of several of those camps that I have received information on and a website link is provided you with more details. This is not meant to be an all inclusive list and I am sure there are others that I would recommend. If you find a camp that you are interested in and want me to take a look at it please feel free to send me the information. We will be having our own camp at CCS on June 27. This camp will offer a unique opportunity for both players and parents who are interested in playing college football. I think it will be another example of how what you get with Cypress Christian Football is a little different than any where else. The camps are generally listed in the order that they happen over the summer.

Locker Room Clean Out

If your son has anything in a locker in the field house it will need to be removed this week or it will be thrown away. On Thursday after school I will be working to organize and clean up the locker room, coaches office, and storage areas. I would appreciate your sons help and a few adults as well for about an hour after school if possible. This will be a good time for them to clean out their locker and turn in any other school equipment they may have. I have already removed helmets, pads and any other school issued equipment.

Thanks,

Coach Spenn

2009 Spring Game Video

This will not be up for long since our opponents do not need a preview. In the fall the video will be larger, of a higher quality and secure but I thought everyone would enjoy getting to watch a little of the spring game.

Spring Game Recap

Cypress Christian won today and I was proud of how our players played. We played hard, hit hard, had fun and never forgot that we are all on the same team. Coach Powers and the defense deserve a lot of credit as they wore the offense down and made a lot of big plays. I was very pleased with our tackling in our first real scrimmage situation since the fall. I hope everyone enjoyed the frantic pace the offense played the game at I am sure it will lead to a lot of excitement in the fall. I am cannot wait to see what we will be able to do in the fall after a few full weeks of practice. Our linemen have learned a lot and get the opportunity to block in some exciting ways in the new offense. We have a great foundation to build on both on the field and off. I believe this is a special team, a special school and that we are embarking on a very special season. It is a privilege to be able to work your son and to lead this program.

High School Spring Game

Our Spring Football Game will be this Saturday at 10AM. Players need to report to the field house prior to 9AM to get their uniform and have their pictures taken for the website and media guide. The spring game will be an offense vs. defense inner squad scrimmage with points awarded depending on the outcome of each play. The spring game will last about 90 minutes. At the conclusion of the game please join the huddle as we give out game balls and encourage our teammates. While the players change we will have a parent meeting to go over the summer schedule and important information for the fall. We will also be talking about The Stadium Project, the Football Booster Club, 2009 season tickets and other exciting things that are coming to Cypress Christian Football for the 2009 season. It should be an exciting day as you get a glimpse of the future of Cypress Christian Football. Go Warriors!

Final MS Spring Practice

Tonight will be the last middle school spring practice. You are welcome to come out and watch as we will attempt to go 11 on 11 and run some basic plays tonight (still non-contact).

Thank you to everyone that was able to attend the parent meeting. If you are interested in more information about the The Stadium Project please go to www.cypresschristianfootball.org and click on support. You will find information about the Football Booster Club and season tickets. All middle school games will be general admission but your reserved stadium chair season ticket for the high school season will get you into all the middle school games. A season ticket form for those that do not want to join the Football Booster Club will be available shortly. The advanced sale of season tickets really helps our budgeting process and will allow us to purchase new equipment for the fall.

We have a lot of good young athletes with several new students enrolling for the fall so I am looking forward to a great season. I will keep you updated on the coaching staff and any summer activities or football camps that are available. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Spring Practice Update

We will conclude our first week of spring football practice tomorrow with our third varsity practice. After two practices each for High School and Middle School we have had over 65 players participate. I am very excited about how our numbers continue to grow with over 40 varsity football players and over 20 middle school football players. Our significant increase in the number of varsity players allows us to practice offense and defense at the same time. This is a tremendous benefit as we are able to teach more in less time and get more reps for all of our players. This has resulted in several new wrinkles in our offense that will be on display at our Spring Football Game, Saturday, May 16 at 10AM.

MS Spring Football Clinic

We had a good first day at the MS spring football clinic.  We teach the basic fundamentals of all the positions on the field. The clinic is four total days and will conclude on Thursday the 14th.  It is a great opportunity for current 5th through 7th graders to learn a little football and have a lot of fun preparing for next season.

Coach Spenn

Spring Practice Kicks Off

We had a great first day of spring practice. It was our first look at incorporating the hurry up no huddle philosophy into our offense and it is exciting to watch. With a roster that should be over 40 players in the fall we are able to practice both offense and defense at the same time which has the effect doubling our practice time on the field. You are welcome to come out and watch any day.

Football Family Fun Day

Warrior Parents,

The Football Family Fun Day was a huge success yesterday. Thank you to all the players and parents that came out to the event and a special thanks to those that help put the event on. We probably had over 50 elementary kids come out and learn a little football. I was extremely excited about how our football players represented the program and took the time to learn the names of the elementary players. I hope to be able to do more events like this in the future as I believe they really help to build the program.

In Christ,

Coach Spenn
